LD England Share Information Consultation Events on Human Rights and Torture- Including Issues on Disability

#1

LD England want to draw attention to this event set up by REDRESS.
This flyer mentions a number of consultations about Human Rights and Torture.
They are seeking to consult with organisations about children and disabled people as part of this.
There are a number of consultation events coming up in October.
In April 2019, the UK will be reviewed by the United Nations Committee against Torture under their periodic review procedure for their compliance with the UN Convention against Torture. The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is an international human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations that entered into force in 1987. Its purpose is to prevent the use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (ill-treatment).

REDRESS is facilitating a joint civil society response to the process, through a series of consultation events and a call for written evidence to inform the preparation of a joint shadow report. REDRESS is working on this project with help from organisations including Disability Rights UK, Liberty, Freedom from Torture, Children’s Rights Alliance England and Children in Wales.

The joint civil society shadow report will cover the range of settings which are relevant to the Convention, including:

  • prisons, policing and intelligence services;
  • health and social care;
  • asylum and migration;
  • violence and abuse against women, ethnic, religious or sexual minorities and victims of trafficking and exploitation.

Some issues, such as children’s rights and disability rights issues, are included across one or more of the above groupings. For a preliminary list of issues please click here .
